Piggy backing off of my last post on drippings, if your teen walks in the room and expresses ANY interest in you, PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN and CLOSE YOUR LAPTOP. Genuinely listen. Firstly, when your teen comes to you, they need you- they won’t come to you if they don’t need it. Secondy, this may be all you get for days.
I learned this tip early in my childrens’ adolescence from the first ever parenting group I participated in as a Master’s student. It is not always easy to do, but it is SO worth it and it shows our adolescents they matter to us more than our devices do.
The next group for parents of adolescents starts in early October. Message me for info, it is now 2/3 full. If you can’t make this one, another one will begin in the new year.
